Project Description
Cocolu is a children's sensory gym concept.
Our goal was to create a space that provides professional treatment catering towards both children and their parents. The gym provides a space for parents to communicate with their kids through activities offered in our programs. This was a collaborative project that involved a team of three students including myself. As the lead designer I helped conceptualize the branding and character concept for the therapeutic space.
-
Design characters that children can relate to
GOALS:

Ideate on website and interactive events
-

Research Study
Before ideating on the branding and character concept, I had done research on the types of therapeutic play areas. From there, my group and I decided to focus on non-directive and indirective play therapy . I began ideating on characters that would entertaining for our demographic and would allow us to incorporate them into our therapeutic activities. Below are some sketches of my original character concept. After taking a poll I had found that most people were drawn to the bird like creature and the mushroom character. This led to my idea of Cocolu and the Cepe mushrooms.
Character Concept
Cocolu's design was inspired by the Galah Cockatoo. From the study above, I found this concept to be more intriguing to viewers. The concept sketch above represents Cocolu before his transformation.
Cocolu was designed as a greedy Cockatoo that loves to collect cacao beans. One day he eats a rare cacao bean and transforms into the cacao bean. He loses all sense of emotion and needs help from the Cepe mushrooms to regain conscious. Below is a concept sketch of his transformation.
Along with Cocolu, the Cepe Mushrooms are the supporting characters that assist Cocolu with his emotional health. These characters were used to guide our users through the space. I designed the "Cepe" characters with varying expressions and colors for children to be able to distinguish.
Branding/ UI
The branding and colors were a key component in our concept. We decided to go for warm and playful colors to keep the childish aesthetic. In order not to make the space feel overwhelming we tried to only use these colors for the characters and to highlight important areas in the space and in our activities as well.
